Austin-based band Soul Track Mind have been known to craft some uptown funk, but even before those words became the title of a mega-hit, the six-member band was at work in the same studio where it was created, developing the finger-popping mélange of funk, R&B and jazz that infuses their latest single, "Can't Stop Us Now." After hearing them compete as finalists for the 2014 Louisiana Music Prize â€" which they won â€" Grammy-winning Royal Studios owner/producer Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell, son of legendary Al Green producer Willie Mitchell, loved them so much, he offered them recording time at the legendary Memphis spot. The track is a follow-up to "Generation Song," the first single they released from their ongoing collaboration with Mitchell. This one emphasizes vocal hooks, keyboards and "more dynamic use of rhythm," according to lead singer/songwriter Donovan Keith, who co-founded the band with guitarist Jonathon Zemek. Both tracks reflect a band that refuses to stand still â€" onstage or in song. But no matter how they evolve, it's all about making uplifting music that's fun to dance to. And that will always be in style.
