Where it All Began
In the early 1960s, the land around Lake Travis was largely undeveloped and known primarily for ranching and oil interests. In 1962, three Houston businessmen—Flint Sawtelle, John H. Crooker Jr., and Lee Blocker—with a vision to create a resort community, purchased 2,700 acres from ranch owner and Houston oilman, Jack Josey. They named the project “Lakeway” in homage to Gulfmont’s Fairway Motor Hotel in McAllen, Texas.
